Do you think vehicles gain or lose weight as they get older? I don’t mean Car X Mk1 compared to Car X Mk2, rather the same car during it’s period of ownership. Theories please.

Well, you need to balance:

(1) weight loss through rust

(2) weight gained through mud in every crevice and detritus in the car

Depends if you live in a rust inducing place or not but I’d guess weight gain over lifetime. Same applies to your car.

I think it stays about the same, clean. You are losing some to rust or erosion - even out of the engine. But then again all those french fries gathering under your seat you cant get at do pile up too (and dust and crap into the carpets and seats)

A lot of the car parts will lose weight because of corrosion and other chemical phenomenon. Not enough for anyone to notice on a modern car though.

On the other hand, you’ll have the gunk that will clutter in the engine and exhaust because of combustion (remember those engines full of carbon desposits that get featured from time to time around these parts?).

All in all, it would be pretty difficult for anyone to notice a change in weight.

Gain. Noone in a brand new car carries around jumper cables, tire irons and the like. I carry all the crap, plus a spare headlight, plus pliers, plus washer fluid, plus oil. Hmmm maybe I should also carry around coolant. Plus I have other assorted crap also.

Always gains weight; debris from passengers and dirt adds up and hides in places you can’t get to in car washes. Run your hands across the top of an anti-sway bar. The gains may not be noticeable, though.

Reminds me of a story — remember weight and balance is important on an airplane. A guy was having his airplane re-rigged and re-weighed after some major equipment modifications (as-is required.) The weight seemed about 25-30 pounds too high and the airplane kept wanting to dip to one side. They drained all the fuel tanks, etc and saw that one side of the airplane (there are scales on each of the three wheels) was heavier than the others and they couldn’t account for the difference.

Buried under the instrument panel in an area that is difficult to access they found a dead, mummified beaver that must have crawled up through the landing gear and made its nest there.

For cars there have been class-action lawsuits against Volvo (and others) as some of the areas used to intake air conditioning air and force out moisture became places where mice and rats could nest.

I would definitely say gain because of all of the crud that gets picked up and stuck in the under side/engine bay over time. Then when you have enough rust where pieces start to fall off you start to lose.

Unrelated but how do I post to the front page of oppo?

Most certainly weight loss due to rust on my XJ at least.

Only if the car is Italian. The electrics will turn to dust and will blow put of the car. Also every time it rains you will los a few pounds from metal disintegration.

I have an Italian car and literally none of that has ever happened. I also own a British car which fits your description perfectly.

British cars don’t lose weight, just gain character.

A Tuner owned car, lose. Carbon fiber replaces metal, parts removed. Lighter weight intakes, exhausts, rear seats and crap removed... Lighter wheels.

My Crown Vic has been undergoing self-lightening at least since I got it. I know this because I’ve swept most of the fender and all of both rocker panels off the driveway.

I meant British/French/Italian most of the time, not exceptions to the rule.
